Zines can be traced back to the 1930s when sci-fi fans started creating and self-publishing stories to share with other fans. Zines were popularized during the 70s and 80s in punk scenes. Zines continue to be a great way to self-publish stories, art, and other political messages.
In December 2025, La Resistencia members began mailing detained people in the Northwest Detention Center a new zine each month. The artwork is created by La Resistencia volunteers and fit onto a 8.5”x11” paper. The pocket-sized 8-page zine continues to be a way La Resistencia shares prompts, puzzles, stories from inside, historical facts, and reminders that they’re not alone.
