People detained have been outspoken against detention conditions including bad quality of water and air, but what about outside the facility? There’s no coincidence that NWDC was built in a super fund site, and is located in the Tide Flats, Port of Tacoma, which is itself a super fund site! Not only that, the industry in the area is dangerous: from Liquid Natural Gas plants to metal recycling plants, and animal food processing plants. In at least three recent instances, all these have something to do with fires happening just a couple of miles away from the facility. People detained are exposed to these dangers, but no evacuation plan is in place for them in case of an emergency, and are never told when an emergency of this kind occurs.
