Back in 2019 the law Keep Washington Working was signed into law, an effort that started back in 2012 with many other bills being introduced to end deportations and collaboration between our state and ICE without success. KWW prohibits all state agencies and police collaboration with ICE, all but one: the Department of Corrections. We have worked since KWW’s enactment to make Governor Inslee follow the leadership of our immigrant communities and align DOC with the rest of the state agencies, to no avail. Therefore we introduced a bill, SB5270, during the state legislative session in 2023 to end this collaboration but then again, Inslee stopped our efforts. We will continue until DOC stops their willingness to work with ICE, and all non-U.S citizens that finish their sentences from prison, are not funneled into ICE custody by ICE.
